Competitor Profile – Bryan van Eck and Jim Gleeson

Bryan and Jim are both long term seasoned competitors from NSW and have been competing regularly since the 80s (or in Jim’s case the late 70s!).They only teamed up together though around 2006/07 and became the NSW Rally Champions in 2017.

Bryan originally competed in Datsun 1200’s and then Toyota Corollas and had a reputation for being a super fast giant killer in these little machines against much more powerful cars in the NSW Championship Rallies . He also surprised a lot of crews at the all tarmac Rally of Tasmania turning up in full gravel spec in his KE55 Corolla and setting some brilliant times.

He upgraded to a Mitsubishi Evo 3 in the mid 2000’s and teamed up with Jim Gleeson to contest the NSW Rally Championship for a number of years. They won the iconic Narooma Rally in both 2007 and 2008, were 2nd overall in the 2007 Bega Valley Rally, 3rd overall in the 2008 Myall Lakes State Round. The last event for the Evo 3 was the 2010 Bega Valley rally, when the gearbox broke while leading the event which was a combined round of both NSW and VIC State Championships.

Bryan went on to purchase a JDM Toyota Altezza and competed in the 2015 Alpine Rally coming a very respectable  4th outright. 2015 was a big year as Bryan also competed in Rally Mongolia, which is an 8 day, 4500 km rally raid on an Enduro Motorbike (XR650). As the first Aussies to compete in this event, Bryan and 2 friends took out the teams prize amongst the 50 competitors.

For his 50th birthday year in 2017 Bryan purchased a Mitsubishi Evo 6  and he and Jim took out the 2017 NSW Rally Championship. Along the way he also acquired another more competitive Toyota Altezza with the goal of another good Alpine Rally result. Bryan and Jim went on to finish 6th in 2017 Alpine Rally.

This year Bryan has been doing mainly AMSAG events in NSW to keep his “blind rally” eye in for the 2019 Alpine where he and Jim are hoping for another good result. Bryan has also been competing in Improved Production circuit racing this year, in his KE70 Corolla race car.
