Alex Gelsomino, born and raised in Italy, started competing at 18 years old in regional tarmac Rallyes in his native Sicily, before moving to USA in 1994. After a couple of years settling in his new country, Alex resumed his career in the California and American championships with many privateer teams.
His first pro ride comes in 2003, competing in the Ford team sponsored by the US Air Force Reserve. The partnership with American driver Ken Block starts a couple of years later, when they start working together with Subaru Rally Team USA and from 2010 with Ford Performance. The duo progresses from the American championship to the WRC in the following years, scoring many national and international outright wins as well as several top 10 finishes in the World Rally Championship.
Since 2014, Alex started also working with other teams and drivers all over the world. In his resume are a multitude of Rallyes in the British, Australian, New Zealand, French, Finnish, Irish, Canadian and Middle East Championships as well as Targa Tasmania events.
Alex and Australian driver Phil Thomas first teamed up at the classic Otago Rally this year, when the pair scored a second place in class finish on what is considered one of the toughest events in the world. What is more impressive is that the pair met and started working together only few days before the rally started.
Phil and Alex will reunite in the beautiful Lock & Load Transport Ford Escort Mk2 again at the prestigious Alpine Rally in East Gippsland, Victoria this coming November and are looking forward to the challenge on Phil’s home stages.
Alex quote: I’m looking forward to work again with Phil and the Lock & Load Transport team in a few months time at the Alpine Rally. It will be my first time running a “blind” (no pacenotes) event in nearly 20 years, but I can’t wait for the challenge. Phil and his team made me feel truly at home when I competed with them earlier this year in New Zealand and we were able to click from the word go, which allowed us to produce a strong result. Can’t wait to be reunited in what is one of the best Ford Escort Mk2 in the world, with Phil behind the wheel on some amazing stages in East Gippsland.
