After many calls and emails between Alpine Rally organisers, DELWP officers, the CFA and members of the local Bruthen community, it has been decided to cancel all rally activities on Sunday December 1st. This was to be the day where the majority of stages were in the forest around Bruthen and the rally was based in the Bruthen township itself.
Friday 29th November will proceed with the ceremonial start at Lakes Entrance followed by one special stage close to Lakes and then, the Koni Super Speedway Stage at Bairnsdale Speedway. Stages 2 and 3 on Friday have been cancelled. Saturday 30th November will proceed unchanged at this point, with all stages on that day well away from any fire affected areas.
As stated we have worked very closely with all authorities and we are pleased to achieve an outcome that allows the event to continue, as well as being respectful of those communities under threat and those communities like Orbost and Cann River who are still looking forward to the event visiting their localities.
In 2017 the Alpine Rally of East Gippsland injected around three million dollars of economic activity into the region and brought an international media spotlight to this wonderful area. So it’s important to the broader community that we make every effort to continue with the event and ensure that we bring that benefit again in 2019.
For spectators, it is important to note that all spectator points on Sunday are cancelled but the Friday and Saturday points are all running as planned. For our officials we will attempt to get specific information out to you ASAP about how the cancellation affects your role.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with the community in and around Bruthen at this time and we will come back in 2021 bigger and better in support of the region.
